SSCV offer a range of training opportunities, including whole staff professional learning for school members and a program of specialised in-house workshops each term. WORKSHOP 1

Beyond the Gender Binary: Creating inclusive environments for transgender and gender diverse students, staff and families

 

When? Monday 6th May 2pm – 4.30pm

 

Where? Room 3.25, La Trobe University City Campus, 215 Franklin St, Melbourne

 

What? This is a session for teaching and welfare staff that will explore how to support gender diversity in a range of proactive ways. It will include how to plan for discussions around gender diversity, finding positive spaces in the curriculum, taking advantage of ‘teachable moments’ and how to access and provide resources and support specifically for transgender, gender questioning and gender diverse students, staff and families. This workshop will also address some of the key strategies used to support any school community member through gender transition.

 

Who? All school staff, including teachers, student welfare coordinators, school nurses and administrative staff – suitable for primary and secondary.



WORKSHOP 2

Quick Wins: simple strategies for supporting sexual diversity

 

When? Thursday 9th May 2pm – 4.30pm

 

Where? Room 3.25, La Trobe University City Campus, 215 Franklin St, Melbourne

 

What?  This is a day for staff who would like to initiate change in their schools but aren’t quiet sure where to start. The session will explore a range of practical and simple steps for immediately breaking down the common barriers that face schools when first joining SSCV. Content will include:

  • Raising awareness throughout the whole school community
  • Tackling homophobia and challenging heterosexism
  • Working with school leadership staff
  • Responding to resistance amongst teaching staff
  • Responding to resistance amongst families
  • Reviewing and updating school policies and practices

 

Who? All school staff, including teachers, support staff, student wellbeing coordinators, school nurses and administrative staff.



WORKSHOP 3

Teacher/Student Partnerships: working together to support sexual and gender diversity

 

When? Tuesday 21st May 2pm – 4.30pm

 

Where? Room 3.25, La Trobe University City Campus, 215 Franklin St, Melbourne

 

What? This will be an opportunity for teachers and students to come together and make plans for initiating and sustaining proactive peer-based projects and groups around sexual and gender diversity. We invite teachers to bring student leaders in the area of sexual and gender diversity along to the workshop, to work together in a structured and supported environment, and share their experiences and ideas with other school teams. Co-hosted by some of the young people in our Stand Out groups, this is a workshop for both young people and teachers who are looking to create more space for student-led change in schools.

 

Who? Teaching staff, leading teaching staff and student leaders in sexual and gender diversity.



WORKSHOP 4

LGBT teachers: Your rights at work

 

When? Tuesday 11th June 2 – 4.30pm

 

Where? La Trobe University City Campus, 215 Franklin St, Melbourne

 

What? This will be an AEU supported session that will provide a safe and supportive space for same sex attracted, sex and gender diverse teachers to come together and share their insights and experiences.  Offering a mix of interactive presentations, small group work and informal discussion, the workshop will cover a range of relevant information, ideas and issues, including:

  • Knowing your rights as an SSASGD teacher
  • Understanding DEECD policies and obligations
  • Challenging a heterosexist work environment
  • Exchanging ideas around best practice for working with homophobia and transphobia in the classroom
  • Teachers coming out
  • Role-modelling for SSASGD students and families

 

Who? Same sex attracted, transgender and sex and gender diverse teaching and support staff.
